Quarantine Favourites

Yes, that's right, I'm every single lifestyle youtuber now.

Quarantine for me has been a little weird - it's involved being in hospital, normal quarantine, and now, going to work every other week, but my favourites have been pretty consistent. I know quarantine is lifting here in Australia now - I'm writing this sitting in a cafe!!! - but I thought people still might like to know.

NXTLVLVNTG play set

Every single fashion youtuber has done a "how to style sweatpants" video for quarantine, and this is my version of it. I have two playsets (shorts and jumper set made out of one vintage jumper) by NXTLVLVNTG, but my purple champion one is my very obvious favourite. It's cute, it's comfortable, and it makes me feel like I can save the world in it:

Dare Iced Coffee

One needs energy to save the world, and I get that energy from bottles of Dare iced coffee. I have one 400ml bottle for breakfast every morning, and maybe it's not the healthiest start to the day, but I'm just glad I'm at a point in my recovery where I'm not scared of the liquid calories. My favourite is the yellow one, which is caramel latte flavoured, but I'll also drink the black or green ones. Mostly green, because my anxiety goes crazy on the amount of caffeine in the black one. When I was in hospital, I made my mum buy me some to keep in the communal fridge so I could keep having them for breakfast, and it became the highlight of my day, drinking coffee while watching the youtube videos that had popped up in my subscription box overnight.

Tik Tok

I am proud to announce that I have graduate from mere watcher of Tik Toks to CREATOR of Tik Toks! I cringe to think of some people in my life, especially my coworkers finding out - I've seen so many people I know on the For You page - but alas, whatever. Here are some of my favourite of my tik toks:

Anaheim Ducks hockey jersey

Out on a walk in civic one day back in the summer, in the heroin-y section of Garema Place, I chanced upon a store called "Ivan's Fashions". The store was so crammed full of clothes that I couldn't even reach most of them. Most of the clothes seemed to be sports clothes - from army uniforms, to basketball jerseys, to workout clothes. I loved everything in the store, but only let myself buy one thing, that being a blue-and-purple Anaheim Ducks hockey jersey. I remember balancing my keys and phone on a pile of clothes to try it on, and falling in love instantly.

I like to wear it mostly as a dress, but also as a jumper over skinny jeans, for an androgynous look. But my favourite of all ways is with my purple fishnet tights - the juxtaposition is just so cool, and it's an outfit I wore many times in hospital, my state of being while I was there being totally overdressed.

I can't wait to go back to Ivan's Fashions once quarantine is properly over; let's pray the pandemic hasn't put them out of business...

Not Washing My Face

Yes, you read right. For years my routine has been to wash my face with Kiehl's face wash every morning and night; it's done me pretty well. But over the past year, ever since I've been in China, I've had terrible acne on my cheeks, primarily my right cheek, which leaves horrible scars. This means that I can't afford to get a single new pimple, because it will create a permanent mark on my face. Nevertheless, the pimples just keep coming. While I was in hospital, and pretty depressed AKA not washing my face very much, I noticed that my skin seemed to get less inflamed/pimply on days where I didn't wash it. So I started an experiment where I only washed my face with water for a few days, and I noticed less breakouts! Since then, I've either just been using water, or not washing my face at all, and my face has adjusted to produce less oil, so I don't feel greasy either!

Reading

This seems like such a silly thing to put on a favourites list - it would be like listing "eating". But, in the first half of quarantine, the hospital half, I didn't read at all. This seems strange, for surely there's no better time to read than when stuck in a psych ward - actually, maybe prison - but I just couldn't stand not having a completely absorbing brain distraction, and being semi-alone with my thoughts. But I dabbled back into it, and, like I said in my previous post, I've been swallowing books whole, in a desperate attempt to block out the abyss.

Some books I've read in May alone:
- The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde
- Memories of my Melancholy Whores by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
- Evening in Paradise by Lucia Berlin
- Yes, Please by Amy Poehler
- Running Out of Entropy by Tim Thorne
- Wide Open by Amy Bodossian
- Conversations with Friends by Sally Rooney

And I'm currently reading:
- White Teeth by Zadie Smith
- Ariel by Sylvia Plath

I've also been reading TIME magazine and The Economist. I used to read TIME every day while I are breakfast as a 15/16 year old, and now that I've picked it back up, I can see how my reading, comprehension, critique, and writing has improved since then, which is nice. Either that or TIME's gone downhill!

OK, I think that's all I've got for now. I really like doing these, so maybe I'll make a new favourites as soon as June!
